Here are a few tips:
1. Did you use a recaptcha system? If not then turn it on
2. Did you use a security question? If not then turn it on
3. You can put the email adress of the spammer in the blacklist for example the spammer has a following email hacker@blabla.uk, then put blabla.uk in the blacklist.
4. You can block a spamer country or ip adress, how you can do that. just type on google "htaccess block country" or "htaccess block ip".
5. There are a lot of spam solutions on the web, just google it.
Sry but my english is bad and I hope you can understand me.

I have recaptcha turned on and have a security question but they still managed to get signed up. Secuity is a maths question.
I can put email of spammer in blacklist, but then they just use a different email address.
Its not always the same spammer and content |

Next few tips:
1. You can enable the option "New members activate administrator?" This has a one disadvantage you have to activate every user manually.
2. You can add a following rule, for example every new user must be authenticated by yourself and after its done he gets a write access to the forum.

Use different security questions. If you website is not multilingual you also can ask questions like: What's the opposite of 'rich'?
Or something like this: "Input the name 'Roy' into the security question field!" |

At the same admin page, you'll find a link on the top of the settings. |
